About this quiz
Grand Theft Auto has been around since 1997, and the series has visited the same three cities again and again, each time in a different decade and with a different cast. This quiz covers the whole history in twenty questions: the original top-down games, the 3D era on PlayStation 2, the HD era that started with GTA IV, GTA V and what has been officially revealed about GTA 6.
After each answer you will see a short explanation, so even if you get one wrong you will walk away knowing a bit more. The answers are shuffled every time you play, so you can try again and see if you can beat your score.

If you want an edge, read our guide to every GTA game in order, which lists every main game and spin-off with its setting and lead character. Our Vice City then and now article covers how the city changed from 1986 to GTA 6, and the GTA 6 glossary explains the new names in Leonida.
A quick history refresher
The first Grand Theft Auto was made by DMA Design, a studio in Scotland that later became Rockstar North. It was viewed from above and already featured Liberty City, San Andreas and Vice City. In 2001, Grand Theft Auto III moved the series into full 3D and changed open-world games for good. Vice City (2002) and San Andreas (2004) followed quickly, each set in an earlier decade.
Grand Theft Auto IV rebuilt Liberty City on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2008, and Grand Theft Auto V arrived in 2013 with three switchable protagonists and GTA Online. Grand Theft Auto VI, set in the present-day state of Leonida, releases on November 19, 2026.
Five facts that did not make the quiz
- San Andreas had three cities. Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas were all in the 2004 game, along with the countryside between them.
- GTA 2 went to the future. It was set in a near-future metropolis known simply as Anywhere City.
- The first expansions went to London. GTA: London 1969 arrived in 1999, followed by a free add-on, London 1961.
- GTA Online started two weeks after GTA V. The game launched in September 2013 and GTA Online followed on October 1, 2013.
- GTA V spanned three console generations. It came out on PS3 and Xbox 360, was re-released on PS4 and Xbox One, and later received versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
How we checked the questions
Every question is based on the released games or on official announcements from Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive. GTA 6 questions only use details Rockstar has published, such as the setting, the protagonists and the release date. If you think an answer is wrong, let us know and we will check it.
Playing with friends
The quiz works well as a party game while you wait for launch. Take turns answering out loud, or have everyone play on their own phone and compare scores at the end. Because the answers are shuffled each time, nobody can simply memorise the order of the buttons from a previous round.
