How the calculator works
Download time depends on two numbers: the size of the game and the speed of your connection. The calculator converts the game size from gigabytes into megabits (one gigabyte is 8,000 megabits), then divides by your speed in megabits per second. That gives the best case: the time it would take if your connection ran at its full advertised speed for the whole download.
Real downloads are almost never that clean. Wi-Fi interference, other devices on your network, busy servers on launch week and normal protocol overhead all slow things down. That is why the big number above is a realistic estimate, which assumes you get about 75% of your plan's speed on average. If you are on a wired connection to a good router, you may beat it; on crowded Wi-Fi you may not.
Mbps or MB/s? The difference matters
This is the most common mistake people make. Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), but download screens on consoles and PCs often show megabytes per second (MB/s). There are 8 bits in a byte, so a 100 Mbps plan downloads at roughly 12.5 MB/s at best. Use the unit menu next to the speed box so you are comparing like with like.
How to find your real speed
- On PS5: go to Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection.
- On Xbox Series X|S: go to Profile & system → Settings → General → Network settings → Test network speed & statistics.
- Run the test at the time of day you plan to download. Evening speeds are often lower than morning speeds because more people in your area are online.
Ways to download faster
- Use a network cable. A wired Ethernet connection is usually faster and far more stable than Wi-Fi.
- Move closer to the router if you must use Wi-Fi, or switch the console to the 5 GHz band.
- Pause other downloads and streams in your home while the game downloads.
- Start the pre-load on day one. Digital pre-loading opens on November 12, 2026. Starting early means launch-night server traffic does not matter.
- Leave the console in rest mode (PS5) or sleep mode (Xbox) with downloads allowed, so it keeps going overnight.
Why the pre-load is the smart move
On release night, millions of players will be downloading the same game at the same time, along with any day-one patch. Content networks are built for this, but speeds can still dip. If your copy is pre-loaded, the only thing left to download at midnight is a small unlock check and possibly an update. Our launch checklist covers every step, and the countdown shows when the pre-load opens in your time zone.
What about boxed copies?
Rockstar has said boxed copies of GTA 6 contain a download code instead of a disc. So the download time is the same whether you buy digitally or in a shop. The difference is that a digital pre-order can start downloading automatically on pre-load day, while a boxed copy can only start once you redeem the code.
Frequently asked questions
How big is GTA 6?
The install size has not been officially announced. Check back here or look at the store page closer to launch.
Why is my download slower than my internet plan?
Plans advertise the maximum speed. Wi-Fi, other devices, server load and overhead mean real downloads usually run below that figure.
Does a faster console download faster?
Not really. Download speed is mostly limited by your internet connection, not by the console model.
