How to use the storage checker

  1. Pick your console from the list.
  2. Enter your free space. The tool tells you where to find it on your console. Use the free space figure, not the total drive size, because the system software and your other games already take up room.
  3. Check the game size. Rockstar has not announced the GTA 6 install size yet, so the box starts with an example figure. Change it once the store page shows the official size, or come back after we update it.
  4. Leave the 10% safety margin switched on. Big games receive patches, and patches temporarily need extra space while they install.
The tool does not guess your free space from the console model, because every console has a different mix of games installed. Checking the real number on your console takes ten seconds and gives an exact answer.

What storage can run GTA 6?

This is the part that catches people out. Current-generation games are designed to run from fast storage, so not every drive you plug in can be used to play them.

PS5: compatible M.2 NVMe SSDYesYes
Xbox: official Storage Expansion CardYesYes

Fastest ways to free up space

  • Move last-generation games to USB. PS4 games on a PS5, and Xbox One games on a Series X|S, can be played straight from a USB drive. Moving them off the internal drive frees space without losing anything.
  • Park current-gen games on USB. You can store PS5 or Series X|S games on a USB drive and copy them back later. Copying back is much faster than downloading again.
  • Delete your biggest unplayed games. Sort your library by size and start at the top.
  • Clean out captures. Video clips can take up tens of gigabytes. Save the good ones to your phone or cloud first.
  • Remove unused add-ons such as language packs and high-resolution texture packs for games you have finished.

Should you buy a storage upgrade?

If you are on a 512 GB Xbox Series S or an original 825 GB PS5 and you like to keep several big games installed, an upgrade is worth considering. On PS5, Sony's guidance is a PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD between 250 GB and 8 TB with a heatsink or other cooling. On Xbox, only the official Storage Expansion Cards that plug into the back of the console can run Series X|S games. Always check the manufacturer's compatibility list for your exact model before you buy.

If you only need room for one more big game, freeing space with the tips above is free and usually enough.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does GTA 6 need?

The official install size has not been announced yet. It will appear on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store listings closer to launch.

Can I play GTA 6 from an external hard drive?

No. USB drives can store current-generation games but cannot run them. Use internal storage, a supported M.2 SSD on PS5, or an official expansion card on Xbox.

Why does the checker add 10%?

Patches and updates often need temporary extra space while they install. The margin helps you avoid running out on launch day.
