The short answer
Grand Theft Auto VI has been announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only, releasing on November 19, 2026. If you own one of those consoles, you can play it at launch. Every other device either has no version announced or has been ruled out because the game is built for current-generation hardware.
All devices at a glance

| Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S | Yes |
| PS4, PS4 Pro | No |

Why not PS4 or Xbox One?
GTA V famously launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 and was later updated for newer consoles. GTA 6 goes the other way: Rockstar built it only for the current generation. The trailers show dense crowds, detailed environments and lighting that rely on the faster processors and SSD storage in the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Older consoles are not part of the plan.
What about the Xbox Series S?
The Series S is the lower-priced member of the Xbox Series family, and games released for "Xbox Series X|S" support both models. GTA 6 is listed for Xbox Series X|S, so Series S owners can play it. The main thing to watch is storage: the original Series S has a 512 GB drive, so check your free space with our storage checker.
What about PC?
There is no PC version announced and no PC release date. Rockstar has historically released its biggest games on consoles first and on PC later: GTA V reached PC about 19 months after its console debut, and Red Dead Redemption 2 about 13 months after. That pattern suggests a PC version is possible, but nothing is confirmed. Read more in our PC release guide.
Not sure which console you have?
It is easy to mix up models, especially if the console was a gift or bought second-hand. Here is how to check:
- PlayStation: on a PS5, open Settings → System → System Software → Console Information to see the model. The PS4 menu is different: it lists the console as PS4 and the system software is far older.
- Xbox: open Settings → System → Console info. The Series X is a tall black tower; the Series S is a small white or black box with a round black vent. The Xbox One family is older and will not run GTA 6.
If the menu says PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, you are ready for launch.
Thinking of buying a console for GTA 6?
Any PS5 or Xbox Series X|S model will run the game. When choosing, think about:
- Storage: larger built-in drives mean less juggling of games. You can add storage later on both platforms.
- Disc drive: GTA 6 boxed copies contain a download code instead of a disc, so a disc drive is not needed for this game.
- Your friends: if you want to play other online games with friends, buy the platform they use.
