Grand Theft Auto VI comes with a whole new vocabulary of places, characters and store terms. This glossary explains each one in a sentence or two, based on what Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have officially announced. Use it as a quick reference before launch.

Places

Leonida

The fictional US state where GTA 6 is set. It is Rockstar's satirical take on Florida.

Vice City

The largest city in Leonida, inspired by Miami. It first appeared in the original Grand Theft Auto in 1997 and starred in 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Leonida Keys

A chain of tropical islands linked by bridges. Rockstar has said the story begins at Jason's home here.

Grassrivers

A wide wetland of grass and mangroves in the south of the state, home to alligators and airboats.

Port Gellhorn

A faded holiday coast of cheap motels and closed attractions.

Ambrosia

An inland region built around a sugar refinery.

Mount Kalaga

A national park in the north, known for hunting, fishing and off-road trails.

See all six on our region explorer.

People

Lucia Caminos

One of the two protagonists, and the first female lead of a modern GTA game.

Jason Duval

The other protagonist, who lives in the Leonida Keys and does jobs for local drug runners.

Supporting cast

Rockstar has introduced characters including Cal Hampton, Brian Heder, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest, Real Dimez and Raul Bautista. Read about them in our characters guide.

Buying and store terms

The bonus included with every pre-order and every purchase made before November 20, 2026.

GTA+

Rockstar's membership programme. Digital pre-orders of GTA 6 include one free month.

Pre-load

Downloading the game before release so it is ready to play at unlock. For GTA 6, digital pre-loading starts on November 12, 2026.

Code-in-a-box

A boxed retail copy that contains a download code rather than a disc. Rockstar has said GTA 6 boxed copies work this way.

The moment a game becomes playable. Store listings show GTA 6 unlocking at midnight local time on November 19, 2026. Check yours with our countdown.

Companies

Rockstar Games

The developer and publisher of the Grand Theft Auto series.

Rockstar North

Rockstar's Edinburgh studio, originally known as DMA Design, which created the first Grand Theft Auto.

Take-Two Interactive

Rockstar's parent company. Its earnings calls are where release dates are often reconfirmed.

Technical terms

Current generation

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the only platforms GTA 6 has been announced for. Older PS4 and Xbox One consoles are not supported.

Day-one patch

An update released on launch day. Even after a pre-load, consoles often download a patch when a big game unlocks.

Rolling midnight launch

A release that unlocks at midnight in each time zone rather than at one worldwide moment, so players in New Zealand start many hours before players in the Americas.

GTA Online

The online mode of GTA V, launched in October 2013 and still running. Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA 6.

Storage expansion

Extra fast storage that can run current-generation games: an M.2 SSD on PS5 or a Storage Expansion Card on Xbox. Read our guide to making space for GTA 6.

Fan terms you will see online

Leak

Footage or information released without permission. A large set of early development footage leaked in 2022; it does not reflect the finished game.

Insider

An anonymous source claiming inside knowledge. Insider claims are not confirmed unless Rockstar repeats them.

Trailer 3

A third trailer fans have been waiting for. Rockstar has not used that name for any release so far.

Is Leonida a real place?

No. It is a fictional state based on Florida.

What does "confirmed" mean on this site?

Information announced by Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive or shown on official store listings.
