Near the end of Grand Theft Auto V, Franklin is put in an impossible position. Two powerful people each order him to kill one of his partners. The choice you make leads to one of three endings, and it is one of the most talked-about moments in the series.

How the choice is set up

After the final heist, Franklin is approached separately by the FIB agents he has been working for and by the billionaire Devin Weston. One wants Trevor dead, the other wants Michael dead. Franklin can obey one of them, or refuse both and look for another way out.

The three options

OptionMission nameWhat Franklin does
ASomething SensibleKills Trevor
BThe Time's ComeKills Michael
CThe Third WayTeams up with both to take down their enemies

Option A: Something Sensible

Franklin chases Trevor to the oil fields and kills him. It is a cold, practical decision that removes the most dangerous member of the crew. Afterwards, Trevor is no longer playable, and Michael and Franklin's friendship is damaged. Many players find this ending unsatisfying because Trevor, for all his faults, was loyal to Franklin.

Option B: The Time's Come

Franklin confronts Michael at a power station, and after a chase Michael falls to his death. Michael is no longer playable afterwards, and Franklin's relationship with Trevor ends. It is a bleak ending that closes the story of a man who never managed to change.

Option C: The Third Way

Franklin refuses both orders and brings Michael and Trevor together for one last job: eliminating everyone who threatens them, including the FIB agent Steve Haines and Devin Weston. All three protagonists survive and remain playable. Because it keeps the full trio and gives each character a satisfying final scene, it is the ending most players choose.

What happens after the ending

Whichever option you choose, you can keep playing in free roam to finish side missions, collectibles and activities. With Option C, all three characters and their homes, businesses and money are still available. With Options A or B, the character who dies can no longer be used, and some content tied to him is lost.

If you are going for 100% completion, choose Option C. Some activities need a character who would otherwise be dead.

Tips before you make the choice

  • Make a separate save. Keep a save from just before the choice so you can see the other endings later.
  • Finish side content first if you like. Some character-specific activities are easier to complete while all three are alive.
  • Spend money wisely. Money held by a character who dies cannot be used afterwards.

Why the ending still matters

The ending choice ties together the game's themes of loyalty, money and power. Each option says something different about Franklin, the character who started with the least and has to decide who he wants to become. It is also a rare case of a GTA game asking the player to make a decision with lasting consequences, something fans hope to see more of in GTA 6.
